Council Proposes New Housing Trust to Address Housing Shortfall
Published on 23 July 2024
Goulburn Mulwaree Council has introduced a strategic initiative to tackle the pressing issue of a housing shortage in the region.
The Council's Advocacy Plan identified a notable deficiency in the availability of housing, exacerbated by the current residential vacancy rate standing at just 1.8% as of April 2024. In response to this critical need, Council has approved the formation of a specialised legal entity known as the ‘Goulburn Mulwaree Housing Trust’.
In order to establish the housing trust, a council controlled entity, an application will be made to seek approval from the NSW Minister of Local Government.
Once established the entity will be dedicated to the development, ownership and management of housing projects in the Goulburn Mulwaree Local Government Area with a focus on affordable and key worker accommodation.
This intentional move seeks to enhance the Council's capacity to address the persistent lack of housing in a more efficient manner and will allow public and private collaborations to help this problem that affects multiple generations.
