Family History Month at the Library
Published on 25 July 2019
Family History is one of the most popular hobbies around the world. Research can reveal hidden treasures and surprising stories that strengthen our understanding of who we are and where we come from. Throughout August, the Library is hosting author talks, and workshops on how to use family history resources.
“A picture tells a thousand words!” On Saturday, 3rd August at 10.30am, Fran O’Flynn, Local Studies Officer will present an information session on the Library’s historic Photo Collection. Fran delves into the archives, highlighting some of the quirky collections acquired over the years. A brief history of photography in Goulburn is also included. There will be plenty of opportunity for browsing and light refreshments are provided at the conclusion of the session.
On Wednesday, 7th August, Jeff Madsen presents Mapping your Ancestors – Show, don’t tell. Maps enhance a family tree to become more than just names and dates. Using Google Maps, you can display your ancestors’ lives online, and share them with others. Jeff is a member of the Society of Australian Genealogists and has had a career in Information Technology and Geographic Information Systems. His session will provide detailed instruction and handouts to take away.
On Thursday, 15th August, Daphne Penalver will present The Stories Behind the Stained Glass Windows of St. Saviour’s Cathedral. Many prominent locals are memorialised in the windows of the Cathedral, behind each one is a family’s story of triumph, tragedy, good deeds and community building. Daphne is a local Historian with a particular interest in Goulburn’s historic architecture. Her talk is accompanied by a PowerPoint display of the stained glass windows.
“Family History Month gives us an opportunity to support family historians by providing access to information, and showcasing our Local Studies Collection” said Library Manager Erin Williams. “Our interesting Program will appeal to many members of our community”.
All activities are free, however, bookings are essential. These can be made online from our ‘What’s On’ page, https://www.gmlibrary.com.au/2017-What-s-On.aspx, in person at the Library, or by calling on (02) 4823 4435.
