Goulburn Mulwaree Council is getting behind the Goulburn Chamber of Commerce Shop Local campaign, reminding residents to give locals a go, and shop 2580.

Economic indicators from the March 2020 quarter showed Goulburn Mulwaree was handling the difficult year as well as any region, however with Australia now in recession it is clear that there are challenges ahead.

Mayor Bob Kirk felt it was a timely reminder, as businesses continue to deal with the restrictions and effects of COVID-19.

“Although it has been an incredibly difficult year, I do feel that businesses in Goulburn Mulwaree have for the most part been able to dig deep and soldier on, which is a credit to our residents.

“Community organisations such as sporting clubs have also had to struggle this year, firstly to get seasons up and running and then to continue on with the tough guidelines for community sport. It is so important that residents shop local whenever possible – the point I always make is that a dollar spent in this community stays in this community, and these businesses are the ones who sponsor the local sports.”

The unemployment rate in Goulburn Mulwaree for the March quarter was stable at only 4.7% which was half a percentage point under the Australia rate of 5.2%.

Building approval values for the 2019/20 financial year have now been compiled, and show the construction industry will continue to power the region’s economy. Residential building value totalled just over $70 million which was on par with previous financial year, while commercial/government projects totalled an incredible $159 million – powered by projects such as the Goulburn Hospital Upgrade, Goulburn Performing Arts Centre and the Aquatic & Leisure Centre upgrade.
