Council Delegation Strengthens Ties with Shibetsu, Japan

Goulburn Mulwaree Council is pleased to announce the successful visit of a 14-strong delegation to Shibetsu City, Hokkaido, Japan, from April 13-19, 2024. This visit marked the 25th Anniversary of the Sister City Agreement between Goulburn and Shibetsu, further solidifying the strong bond between the two communities.

Mayor Peter Walker expressed his enthusiasm about the visit, stating, "The Sister City relationship between Goulburn and Shibetsu has been a cornerstone of cultural exchange and friendship for the past 25 years. This visit has reinforced our commitment to strengthening our ties and exploring new opportunities for collaboration."

During the visit, the delegation engaged in a range of activities, including a welcome meeting at Shibetsu City Hall, a tour of the Motor Proving Grounds, and visits to local schools and cultural sites. It is important to note that the delegates funded their own way for this trip. The delegation also participated in discussions with Shibetsu Council on various topics, such as student exchange programs, work opportunities, and tourism marketing initiatives.

Mayor Walker highlighted the importance of these discussions, stating, "The exchange of ideas and experiences between our two cities is invaluable. We look forward to continuing to build on this relationship and exploring new avenues for cooperation in the future." The visit culminated in a formal 25th Anniversary Celebration dinner, where representatives from both councils exchanged gifts and enjoyed traditional Japanese entertainment.

Council will continue to explore opportunities for collaboration with Shibetsu City Council, with a focus on mutual benefits and shared goals.
