Goulburn welcomes Governor-General

Mayor Bob Kirk welcomed Governor-General His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), and Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley to Goulburn on Thursday to recognise the 75th anniversary of World War Two.
An official reception and medal presentation to nine local World War Two veterans was held at the Goulburn Soldiers Club. The event was a fitting way to recognise their immense contribution, with the Governor-General presenting each veteran with a Commemorative Medallion to say thankyou for their service.
The visit also included a tour of Goulburn and the Avenues of Remembrance, lunch with the owners of new local business K&Gz, a visit to Goulburn East Primary School and conclusion at Rocky Hill War Memorial where a wreath laying was held before a tour of the new Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum where we had the opportunity to chat with our brilliant Museum volunteers.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to host His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), and Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley in our City on Thursday” said Mayor Bob Kirk.
“The highlight of the day was of course the reception and medal presentation to our veterans, and it was outstanding to have nine of them able to come along in good health to attend. His Excellency was very impressed with the growth of our region, and of course the new Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum which is an asset that will attract tourism for years to come.
“It is so important that we reflect on our history, and honour those who have sacrificed so much for the comfortable lives we lead today. We hope to welcome Governor-General His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley to our region again soon, hopefully in circumstances where we can hold larger events.”
The World War Two veterans who were presented with Commemorative Medallions were;
Lance Cooke, James Flood, Peter Allen, Ron Butterworth, Dulcie Gegg, Linda Mace (on behalf of Kathleen Mace), Vincent McMahon, Roger Penman and Albert Privett.
Goulburn Mulwaree Council would also like to recognise the immense contribution of the Goulburn RSL Sub-Branch and in particular President Gordon Wade OAM for their assistance in pulling this event and day together.
