May Street Bridge open to the community

May Street Bridge has been completed and is now open to the community, a month ahead of schedule.

Work on the $1.15 million replacement kicked off in June, with the bridge raised half a metre to improve flood vulnerability and to also avoid creating an impact upstream during flood events. The project has delivered a much improved two lane bridge along with complementary footpaths and kerb and gutter to improve pedestrian experience.

Mayor Bob Kirk said he was pleased to see the important project completed in Eastgrove.

“I’m sure the residents of Eastgrove will be pleased to have the bridge open and May Street once again accessible. The route is now more likely to be usable during a flood event, while being significantly improved compared with the old bridge which was restricted to one way traffic only.”

 “The route is also significantly improved for our walkers, runners and cyclers with footpaths now in place where originally pedestrians and cyclists were forced to traverse over the single lane bridge which was a significant safety concern.”

Over 500 metres of footpath and nearly 700 metres of kerb and gutter have been completed separately on May Street which further improves the infrastructure and user experience.

The bridge construction project was undertaken by SD Group who won the tender in March, and have completed the project a month early despite difficulties with inclement weather and flooding.
