Travel Safe this Holiday Season
Published on 20 December 2022
Sadly, Christmas time is one of the most dangerous times of year on the road. Goulburn Mulwaree Council would like to remind you all to keep road safety front of mind when travelling, so that all road users make it home safely this holiday season.
“Holiday traffic is usually very heavy during the Christmas/ New Year period, there will likely be even more traffic on the road with this being the first Christmas without COVID restrictions in some years - so patience is a must.” Said Mayor Peter Walker.
“Please also allow extra travel time due to the road conditions in most of the state due to the recent weather events. If you have lost time, do not speed to make up for it. There is simply no point in taking the risk. Additionally, you will run the risk of receiving a hefty fine as well as increasing your chances of having a serious accident.”
“We all need to be mindful that young children on new bikes and scooters will be out and about, please ensure your children wear a helmet and are respectful when riding on footpaths and the walking tracks.” Mayor Walker continued.
Here are a few tips for staying safe during the holiday period: -
- Always have a Plan B – even the morning after.
- Share the driving - stop, revive, survive.
- Get your vehicle serviced before those trips.
- Make sure you have plenty of water and snacks for those unplanned delays on the road.
- Be patient on the road - drive so you and others survive.
- Speed - remember it’s a limit not a target, drive to the conditions.
Don’t miss Christmas by accident.
